In 1997, a group of 12 people talented in knitting and crocheting, several generous yarn suppliers, and Merribee embarked on "Project Hope Afghan" to help warm pediatric patients during treatment. Throughout 1997, our group of artisans used donated yarn to create 30 handmade afghans, which we distributed to pediatric patients at MD Anderson Hospital for Christmas. To the right, you can see a picture of some of our volunteers. |
As "Project Hope Afghans" gained momentum, publicity and public interest about the project also increased. For instance, when The 1960 Sun newspaper learned about "Project Hope Afghans" they published a front-page article about it. Moreover, in a letter describing the delight "Project Hope Afghans" brought to their young patients, MD Anderson Hospital requested the project to endure. Channel 2 and FOX news stations have also covered our drop offs at MD Anderson. To the left, you can see one of the children at MD Anderson Hospital who received a Project Hope Afghan. |
To help share ideas and have even more fun while knitting, we get together every Friday afternoon in our store. To find out where we are located see our map. To learn more about our monthly schedules, view our calendar. If you would like to participate in the "Project Hope Afghan" using donated yarn, please come to our store to sign up. We will either give you the necessary yarn (depending on our supplies) or you have the option of purchasing new yarn. When you have completed the afghan simply return it to us for our next donation. If you choose to use your own yarn please use a soft, light weight, and washable fiber. To the left, you can see an example of a beautiful afghan one of our volunteers made for Project Hope. In the middle, you can see the shape of a bunny woven through the afghan with a pink ribbon. Please make sure to avoid knitting too loosely. We will not be able to accept afghans with large holes in them. Remember, children ranging from newborns to teenagers will receive the afghans and we do not want them to become tangled in their afghan. You have control over the dimensions and pattern of the afghan. Be as creative as you desire. However, we recommend the size to be around 4 feet in length and 3 feet in width. If you have any other questions about making the afghan, please feel free to call us at 281 440 6980 or email at info@merribee.com |
